With Dante audio networking technology having been widely adopted by the pro audio industry, developer Audinate is now launching Dante AV for the distribution of audio and video over standard IP networks. The new module is described as offering ‘all the benefits’ of Dante audio over IP, such as discovery, ease-of-use and integrated control, to video. Audinate has also confirmed that Dante AV is compatible with the more than 1,600 Dante-enabled audio products already on the market.

‘Customers want us to bring the “V” to “AV”,’ said Audinate CEO Lee Ellison. ‘With Dante AV, we are excited to make that a reality. The Dante AV Module and the Dante AV Product Design Suite will enable manufacturers to quickly get integrated audio and video products to market, with all of the benefits Dante has to offer. We’re taking everything we've learned from years in networked audio to the video world and delivering on our vision of a truly integrated, easy-to-use and interoperable AV experience.’

Dante AV uses a single network clock for ‘sub-microsecond accuracy’ in synchronising audio and video. Audio and video signals can be routed individually via an interface on the Dante Controller software. Dante API can be used to customise the interface. Audinate claims that Dante AV eliminates time alignment issues and the need for audio de-embedders.

The Dante AV Module supports one video channel and eight uncompressed bi-directional Dante audio channels and is primarily aimed at manufacturers developing 1G video-over-IP products with Dante control, transport and synchronisation. Its architecture is codec-agnostic, so manufacturers have free rein.

The Dante AV Product Design Suite, available with the Dante AV Module, provides manufacturers with a full AV-over-IP endpoint product design. The Dante AV Module is incorporated into the Product Design Suite and includes the hardware documents and software needed to create fully interoperable AV products and to speed up the process of getting a new solution to market.

A JPEG2000 codec supporting 4K/60 4:4:4 video is included in the Dante AV Product Design Suite, said to offer ‘visually lossless results with low latency over a 1Gbps network’. The design suite also prevents the copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across connections by implementing HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection).

The launch of Dante AV is not expected to encroach upon Audinate’s collaborative efforts with the SDVoE Alliance that beagn last year. Together, Audinate and Dante created an integrated control experience using Dante Controller by routing SDVoE video streams and Dante audio streams through the same interface. This was accomplished by updating Dante Controller to read the SDVoE API, and displaying those video channels in the software.

Interestingly, Audinate’s Joshua Rush hinted at Dante AV when discussing the partnership with the SDVoE Alliance: ‘We think the SDVoE partnership is the first of several important partnerships in the video over IP space,’ he told Pro AVL Central. ‘While the SDVoE Alliance is clearly the market leader in the 10G space, there are a number of applications for 1G solutions in the installed market. Ultimately, we would like to integrate Dante with several VoIP solutions so we can offer that same unified control and management experience, regardless of the market or application.’
