NMK launches music and AV investment initiative

Dubai-based distributor NMK Electronics has announced the creation of a new investment fund specifically targeting the global music and pro AV industry. Throughout its 30-plus-year history, the distributor has seen many companies come and go, and feels it possesses a unique and valuable insight into the market that can be leveraged to support new start-ups. Named NMK Ventures, the fund is the brainchild of recently appointed COO Alex Kemanes whose prior experience in start-ups makes him uniquely positioned to support and lead the Ventures initiative.

‘We’ve seen companies start out 10 to 15 years ago and today they have grown to become market leaders in the industry,’ explained Mr Kemanes. ‘Our approach with NMK Ventures is to support these new start-ups today, which will eventually go on to become important players in the market in a decade’s time. The goal is to find new technologies, new hardware and new software; anything to do with our market that offers a global reach. It could be in the events space, for example, a new ticketing software, an event planning software, or a hardware product like a new mixer. If it’s relevant to our industry in any way, we want to take a look at and evaluate it.’

The new initiative will see the distributor take a small equity stake in the companies it invests in, in exchange for funding and the leveraging of NMK’s network – either through distribution or the industry contacts and relationships it possesses. ‘A lot of these start-ups are already raising funds through various generic means,’ furthered Mr Kemanes. ‘We want to give “smart money”. That means not just cash, but also the knowledge that we’ve amassed. This includes market insights, and also the perspective we’ve gained from working in the Middle East market. A lot of these new companies want to enter the Middle East, and vice versa, we can help local companies starting out here grow outwards.’
