InfoComm SEA: Are you experienced?

When InfoComm Asia closed its doors in Hong Kong nine years ago, its organiser – Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association (AVIXA) – opted to focus on the Chinese and Indian markets with standalone shows. However, the not-for-profit operation hadn’t altogether abandoned the ASEAN territories and raised eyebrows last year with the announcement that it would host InfoComm Southeast Asia in 2019. Having opted to host the exhibition and summit in Bangkok, some sceptics suggested that the location would lend itself to a Thai rather than a regional audience.

On the basis of these first eight hours, InfoComm SEA is set to become a regular annual fixture in the calendar. Resembling an ultra-compact format of its US big brother, a single hall of the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC) is hosting around 130 exhibitors. A large number of digital signage manufacturers blend in with big brand projection companies, conferencing, loudspeaker and microphone producers together with a number of prominent AV suppliers.

Being something of a wild card exhibition with no previous form, exhibitors appear to have played it cautiously, opting to showcase a wide variety of products and solutions. Bose, for example, displayed the portable S1 Pro, the Arena Match arrays designed for stadiums, the Edgemax EM180 and DMC2 ceiling speakers together with conferencing products. ‘Although we have a good idea of the visitor profile, we couldn’t be sure,’ commented regional manager, Christian Liebenberg. ‘As such, we decided to feature a wide selection of speakers suited for the corporate, hospitality, venues and rental sectors.’

While Shure continues to focus on its new 2019 rebranding, the US microphone specialist demonstrated its MXA Microflex Advance and Complete Wireless technologies for use in conferencing applications. On the eve of the show, Shure maximised its exposure in Thailand by hosting a Conferencing Network Meeting. Likewise, German Adam Hall drew its Asian distributors to Bangkok for a summit prior to the event and promoted the latest 2019 products from Cameo, Defender, Gravity and LD Systems brands. As such, both exhibitors had helped to draw a greater audience to InfoComm SEA.

In the wake of ISE three months ago and prior to InfoComm Orlando next month, product launches were almost non-existent. However, many technologies were being unveiled as their Asian debuts, such as Calibre’s LED Fusion all-in-one LED wall and SmartBrick. Leading AV Thai distributor Vichai 1983 Trading has opted to display an impressive portfolio of its brands, many of which are showcasing new products for the first time. These include the Renkus-Heinz IC Live X speaker system, the Midas M32 Live console and the QSC NV-32-H network video system.

Just as the technological landscape changes, so does AV distribution in Thailand. Following its inception two years ago, Sonos Libra was making its first major splash at an international exhibition backed by its suppliers Adamson, Allen & Heath, Audac and Xilica. ‘I haven’t had a chance to have a coffee today,’ expressed a hoarse Alfonso Martín who had been engaged in continual talks with customers. Having taken the plunge to invest in this exhibition, early indications appear to favour a good return.

Visitor levels were impressive ensuring that many visitors and exhibitors were given the opportunity to catch up with old friends while meeting new contacts for the first time. Meanwhile, above Hall 98 in the Amber and Nile rooms, the 2019 Summit is presenting a varied schedule including AVIXA seminars and a multitude of industry forums.

‘How we innovate – or how we continue to surge forward when the pace of technological change is overwhelming – is by creating experiences that improve collaboration, communication, education and entertainment,’ commented AVIXA CEO, David Labuskes, in his programme notes. The technology being promoted at InfoComm SEA is certainly stimulating the SIs, consultants and end-users, making the journey to the BITEC a rewarding one. InfoComm SEA continues on Thursday 16th May from 10.00–18.00 and on Friday 17th May from 10.00–16.00.
