China:

China Media Group recently held its Mid-Autumn Festival Party in Qufu. An Alcons Audio pro-ribbon LR28 larger-format line array system was supplied by the manufacturer’s Chinese distributor, EAD, to deliver sound reinforcement from the 60m-wide stage, across the 5,000-seat audience area that was 80m x 100m (WxD).

The event’s audio director was Liu Yibin, lead sound engineer for China Central Television (CCTV), who worked alongside chief sound engineer Mr Xu to overcome several challenges. As well as the size of the venue, its proximity to Mount Ni and the Nishan Reservoir meant that strong breezes and a changing humidity could cause problems with the sound.

The main system comprised left and right hangs of 14 LR28/80 and two LR28/110 wide dispersion modules, as well as three LR18 compact mid-size line array modules for down-fill per side. Six ground-stacked groups of three LR18s were positioned across the front of the stage for fills, while 14 BC543 cardioid subwoofers were placed in left and right stacks of seven. Due to the width of the stage, two additional BC543s were used to enhance the bass in the central stage area. The entire system was powered and controlled by 28 Alcons Sentinel10 amplified loudspeaker controllers. The setup was designed using EASE Focus software and the CCTV audio team used Alcons’ ALControl software to build the network system control for the arrays.

‘Thanks to the directivity, all-natural cylindrical wavefront and exceptional throw of Alcons Audio’s pro-ribbon technology, a strong breeze and high humidity did not affect the transmission of sound at all,’ confirmed Xu. ‘The pro-ribbon drivers of the LR28 system really pushed the high frequencies, ensuring very low distortion and maintaining a very clear sound for the whole audience.’

Yibin concurred: ‘The Alcons Audio system ensured that the sound was very clear and accurate for all of the 5,000 people in the arena. The sound pressure level was maintained perfectly to the far back and sides of the audience, keeping a very even soundfield throughout.’
