China:

The Litchi Grand Theatre in Jiangsu province has upgraded its performance space with the installation of a d&b audiotechnik V-Series system.

The theatre, which opened in 2009, was originally designed to film Jiangsu Radio and Television's popular You Are the One TV show, with more than 400 episodes having been produced at the venue. More recently, however, the theatre has started to host a wider range of events, including theatrical performances, opera and drama, as well as amplified concerts, for which an audio upgrade was deemed necessary.

‘The reverberation time of the theatre is about 1.4 seconds,’ explained Zhou Kesheng, director of the Jiangsu Broadcasting and Television Station, who is based at the venue. ‘It is a standard design for opera houses and multipurpose halls, and this makes for a good performance venue, both for music and speech reproduction.’

The solution provided by d&b audiotechnik Greater China comprises a main L-R system of four V8 line array speakers to cover the stalls and two Yi8s for the balcony, with a centre cluster of a further four V8s and two V12s. Two V-SUBs have been flown above the L-R hangs, while there is also an omnidirectional B22 subwoofer ground-stacked on each side. ‘Placing the B22 on the ground can emphasise the low frequency in the stalls,’ explained Chan Chiwai of d&b Greater China.

Main side-fills for the stalls are provided by 12S-Ds, while rear-fill duties are carried out by E8s. The system was designed with the d&b ArrayCalc simulation software to achieve the most even coverage and SPL.

‘The d&b system is very easy to design, install and debug,’ added Chiwai. ‘The reproduction for vocals or instruments is extremely accurate, and there is no need for too much external processing for correction.

‘This project is a great example of the strength of d&b's sound reinforcement solutions. It allows the audience to become immersed in the live music; they don’t feel the existence of the loudspeaker. Both the quality and stability of the system have been unanimously recognised by the venue’s owners as well as performers and audience.’

The newly-refurbished Litchi Grand Theatre is now hosting a varied programme of stage performances, primarily opera, drama, and concerts. ‘The new system emphasises the characteristics of classical music and traditional theatre performances, as well as the soft and natural sound characteristics of the hall itself,’ said Zhou. ‘I also hope that during the performance of opera and classical music this solution allows the audience not forget the presence of the loudspeakers.’
