Exclusive: A Vestec design reigns in The Governor

Australia:

Located in Sydney's northern suburb of Macquarie Park, a newly constructed multi-level pub, bistro and rooftop bar has opened its doors to the community. While a highly regarded head chef has created all of The Governor’s menus, the four-storey venue has further distinguished itself by placing a heavy emphasis on producing even audio coverage throughout. As such, Sydney-based SI Vestec Electro Pty Ltd was contracted to install a widely distributed audio solution throughout its zoned premises.

The scene is set in the entrance as patrons and guests are greeted by BGM output from Martin Audio CDD5 5-inch speakers. A saunter through The Governor’s ground-floor main bar and bistro ensures that an even dispersion of decibels emitting from 56 CDD5 cabinets is playing its part courtesy of the distributed system. ‘In addition to providing a consistent, warm tonal quality throughout, the design has minimal visible impact on the venue’s décor,’ explained Vestec Electro’s Mark Vesic. ‘Given the acoustic properties such as the exposed concrete ceilings, hard floors and wall surfaces, the natural tonal qualities shine through.’

During the later hours on weekend nights, the dancefloor comes to life once the kitchen has closed. Differentiating itself from the other zones, a combination of four Martin Audio CDD15 speakers and four Martin Audio X115B subwoofers, powered by QSC CMX 2000Va and 800Va amplifiers, transform diners into dancers. Providing further level control, additional booths surrounding the bistro and dancefloor are also equipped with volume trim faders.

Located within a commercial area, The Governor’s clientele includes groups of office staff. As such, six small seating enclaves and booths are incorporated into a design where, in the absence of acoustic partitioning, each zone has been fitted with a separate volume control to minimise spillage. Three of these controllers can select between the local TV or main bar audio sources. ‘This requirement is especially prevalent in the main bar area, where the speakers are ceiling-mounted down the centre of the room radiating outwards to their respective enclaves, as opposed to wall-mounted speakers radiating inwards,’ added Vesic. ‘This positioning achieved two of the requirements – minimum spill and low visual impact.’

During daylight hours, the same vibe is extended to the garden terrace with its timber detailing, exposed brick walls, live green wall and festoon lighting courtesy of weatherised CDD5 cabinets. The extensive rooftop includes a cocktail bar and dancefloor, where a further 48 CDD5 speakers supplemented by six dual 10-inch X210 subwoofers ensure a consistency in the audio delivery.

Like the Martin Audio speaker system, the QSC amplification and processing was also supplied by Sydney-based Technical Audio Group. The three 42U equipment racks located in the second-floor comms room incorporate three Q-Sys Core 110f processors to ensure appropriate EQ, levels and filters are applied to all the zones. With two of the 110f processors catering for the ground and rooftop levels, core-to-core streaming ensures that both systems can access all the available input sources. The large inventory of Martin Audio speakers is powered by a combination of 17 CMX 500v and eight CMX 800v low-impedance amplifiers and connected by 4.5km of 2mm and 4mm cabling.
