DVB announces approval of specification

The DVB-I specification has been approved by the DVB Steering Board and published as the DVB BlueBook A177. The specification concerns the possibility of delivering linear television to any device with an internet connection and media player and explores ways for internet-connected devices to find linear television services that can be delivered through broadband or broadcasting mechanisms.

The specification also mentions how to receive electronic programme data for the services which can be integrated into a single offering and accessed through a user interface.

Implementers are able to develop with DVB-I-enabled clients, while both broadcasters and content providers can start to make their services DVB-I-enabled. ‘In developing an internet-centric solution for linear television services, we are providing the industry with a crucial missing piece that raises internet-based delivery to the same level in the DVB ecosystem as RF-based content delivery,’ said Peter MacAvock, chair of DVB. ‘With these building blocks, addressing the discovery of DVB-I services and the delivery of programme metadata, DVB offers broadcasters and operators an exciting new deployment option.’
