The Kobe City Misaki Park, also known as Noevir Stadium, has hosted many sporting events since its beginning in 1970, including the 2002 Japan–Korea FIFA World Cup and the more recent 2019 Rugby World Cup. With many more events on the way, the stadium’s audio system was recently upgraded with Powersoft amplifiers, integrated by TOA’s sound engineering department.

‘When designing or refurbishing an audio system in a stadium, you have to ensure that it is able to offer both flexibility and scalability,’ said Marc Kocks, Powersoft’s business development manager. ‘A good place to start is by selecting DSP- and Dante-enabled products, as they allow users to change the function and behaviour of the system with the click of a mouse. At the same time, powerful limiters and crossovers found on Powersoft amplifier platforms keep the system protected under all circumstances.’

Shigeyoshi Ariga, an engineer from TOA and the integrator for the project, deployed 24 Powersoft X8s to power the stadium’s line array systems, six Ottocanali 12K4 DSP+Ds for the auxiliary speakers in the upper tiers, an 8K4 DSP+D that accommodates any temporary speakers used and a 4K4 DSP+D amplifier to drive the high-Z speaker line and monitor speakers in the operating room. The amplifiers also power a sound system for playing audio alongside video content shown during events on the big screens. The audio transmissions are transferred between the rooms via Dante and the system is managed using Powersoft’s ArmoníaPlus software.

The installation team faced many challenges with the project, including the stadium’s retractable roof. ‘The stadium was very difficult to control from a tuning point of view, as it has a lot of reflective surfaces that get mixed up together,’ said Fumiaki Yuasa, an in-house systems engineer and operator for the Noevir Stadium. ‘Within ArmoníaPlus, the Raised-cosine filter can help with this aspect. I tried to create the best conditions with the roof open, which was a complex task because of resonance points at certain frequencies. By using ArmoníaPlus, I was able to create grouping functions in order to turn this complex system into an easy-to-understand one, which in turn allows me to carry out my work more efficiently.’

Yuasa also discussed the features of Powersoft’s software. ‘What I like most about ArmoníaPlus is the Interactive Tuning and Limiter functions,’ he added. ‘Interactive Tuning is great as it allows me to fine-tune the synchronisation with Smaart v8, which a lot of engineers are currently using, as well as making adjustments while looking at the screen and keeping the system quiet. This is a unique feature and an innovative way to reduce stress on engineers onsite, something that has maybe been overlooked by other amplifier platforms.’

Ariga also commented: ‘The Workspace in ArmoníaPlus itself is great for us, as the layout of the amplifiers and speakers are graphically arranged and controlled to match the installation situation in the real world. At the same time, the Operator View function was graphically installed according to the same layout as Workspace, so that all of the output headroom could be centrally monitored in one screen. With no dedicated operator in the stadium, Operator View only displays the headroom meter and the mute function so that someone who is unfamiliar with the management of the stadium can still operate it easily. Functional restrictions have also been put in place to prevent unnecessary changes to the Workspace setup.’

With new amplifiers powering the sound setup at the Noevir Stadium, which first opened in 2001, the next step will be to overhaul the speaker setup. ‘This will hopefully happen within a few years,’ revealed Shin Yamada from Powersoft distributor, Audio Brains.
