Since 2012, LeVeL33 has claimed bragging rights as the world's highest urban microbrewery. Residing in the penthouse of Singapore’s Marina Bay Financial Centre (MBFC) with a commanding vista of Marina Bay and the city’s skyline, the restaurant and bar are the epitome of urban penthouse dining.
Upon entry, copper brew house kettles take centre stage to remind a patronage of locals, expats and tourists alike that the production of freshly brewed beer lies at the heart of LeVeL33. The craft-brewery integrates aesthetics, form and functionality, while the interior designer has further emphasised the modern dining room and social lounge with wood textures and earth tones. Refurbished in late 2019, the BGM and announcement system serving the interior and outdoor rooftop terrace was also added to the clerk of works.
Resonate Solutions team was tasked with designing and installing the audio upgrade for LeVeL33. ‘A higher SPL solution was required for the multi-zoned, multifunction space,’ explained director, Luther Ong. ‘The previous distributed ceiling speaker system was lacking sufficient power when the venue was hosting events with bands and DJs. In addition, the eight zones all require differing DSP settings and, importantly, the facility manager needed ease of use access.’
A d&b audiotechnik loudspeaker system combining 5S and 8S black-finished cabinets together with compact Bi8 subwoofers caters for the various interior zones, whilst white 5S models provide the correct ambience on the exterior balcony. ‘Naturally, the bar is adorned with the subwoofers and a higher concentration of enclosures than the private and public dining rooms, lounge and foyer. The 100° conical dispersion characteristics of these coaxial speakers provides an even distribution of audio throughout all the zones.’
Having to complete the installation in between the hours of midnight and 8am over the course of one week, Ong and his Resonate team soon discovered the ease of installation benefits associated with the S-series models. ‘Once we had installed Canare 14-gauge cabling from the back of house rack to the loudspeaker outputs, installing the 5S, 8S and Bi8 subs into the open-ceiling architecture was straight forward using d&b’s brackets and accessories,’ furthered Ong. ‘Weighing just 2.5kg and 7.4kg respectively, the S5 and S8 models are easily fixed into position by utilising one of the M8 threaded inserts on the rear panel before termination.’
Set at 4Ω, the three 10D four-channel amplifiers are equipped with separate input gain control, General Purpose Inputs/Outputs (GPIO) and a general fault connector. The DSP integrated within the 10D incorporates filtering functions, user-definable equalisation and delay capabilities including two 16-band equalisers and can be accessed via the d&b Remote network. A Denon CD and MP3 player serves as the main music source.
Interfaced to an iPad touchscreen, a Yamaha MTX3 26x8 matrix processor provides flexible signal processing functions for the director of operations. In addition, volume and microphone settings for the lounge, bar and two dining rooms can also be configured via a Cat-5 connected DCP 4V4S-Eu wall-mounted control panel should the venue be hosting a DJ or live band. The DJ output behind the bar can also be used for inputting a Sennheiser XSW 2-835 UHF dynamic microphone. Finally, the entire audio network is systematically powered on and off via the Furman CN3600SE sequencer
Without distracting the diner from the rustic food and the crafted beers on offer at LeVeL33, the background and foreground music system designed by Resonate Solutions has elevated the ambience a further notch up.
