New Zealand festival plays to record crowds with d&b

New Zealand:

Christchurch’s Electric Avenue Festival has drawn a record crowd of 25,000, with local bands including Benee, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Tiki Taane performing across multiple stages.

Western Audio, the audio supplier for the Park Stage, recommended d&b audiotechnik KSL and GSL models from the SL-Series to provide the stage with dynamic and flexible sound. The crew used d&b’s ArrayProcessing line array optimisation software and NoizCalc noise prediction software to evenly cover the audience. The main system consisted of

20 GSL8s and four GSL12s, with 12 V8s for side fill, four V7Ps and eight Y7Ps for front fill, 12 KSL8s as a delay system and 12 SL-SUB subwoofers, all powered by D80 amplifiers.

“To enable the festival to go ahead, strict council noise limits needed to be met,” explained Western Audio Engineering director, Richard McMenamin. “ArrayProcessing and NoizCalc were vital in the planning stages of the event to model and mitigate any noise issues before they were encountered. GSL and KSL were chosen for the Park Stage due to their superb sound quality and their excellent pattern control.”

Artist and sound engineer Tiki Taane not only got to perform on the Park Stage but was also mixing FOH sound for the headline act, Shapeshifter. “The d&b SL System was next-level huge,” said Taane. “The clarity and frequency response to all the little mix adjustments I was making was unbelievable. I do a lot of EQ filter sweeps on the synth bass, and also on the reverb return channels for those exciting moments in the songs, and the energy coming from the d&b System was mindblowing. There was so much headroom and fatness that I was more than happy with sitting the mix at 109dB at mix position, knowing that there was still more in the tank for those big moments.”

Added festival production manager Bevan Hancox: “We are happy with the outcome of this well-deployed rig and proud to use d&b audiotechnik – it covers all my bases and keeps the touring engineers, audience members and the promoter happy. As always, the definition was crystal clear.”
