Lenovo adds MSolutions USB-C extenders to its ThinkSmart portfolio

MSolutions, a supplier of AV test devices and collaboration solutions, has partnered with Lenovo to create networked collaboration solutions for Lenovo's Microsoft Teams Room and Zoom Room customers. This collaboration combines MSolutions' compact USB-C extenders with Lenovo's ThinkSmart USB portfolio, allowing the extension of USB-C data channels over a single CatX cable infrastructure for up to 100m.

Lenovo's ThinkSmart USB portfolio consolidates essential AV and IT tools needed for modern collaboration requirements, encompassing cameras, audio equipment and control devices. The options range from streamlined systems suitable for smaller spaces, such as all-in-one video/soundbar setups, to comprehensive, integrator-friendly room kit solutions for larger areas.

Mark Whittaker, smart collaboration technical consultant for Lenovo, explained: "The challenge we faced was about establishing a stable, long-distance USB-C connection with no perceivable delay, and without the need to swap different cable types. MSolutions proved to have the rare solution to address all these needs."

Before collaborating with MSolutions, most ThinkSmart configurations had distance limitations, with most cable lengths under 15m, often necessitating block repeaters if core computing systems were centralised in an IT closet. The MS-6U1C extender is said to provide reliable connectivity, removing the bulkier cabling infrastructure while ensuring signal integrity even when peripheral devices are hidden from view. It also supports RS-232 serial pass-through and bi-directional 12V PoC over the same CatX connection.

Whittaker first encountered the MS-6U1C at InfoComm in June, where MSolutions CEO Eliran Toren invited him to the booth to test the networked solution. Whittaker initially expressed skepticism about USB-C extension, but he was pleasantly surprised by the results. "They came by our booth, plugged in the extender, and to my surprise, it just worked. Now, we can reliably extend our touchpanel to our core situated on a rack inside a closet without requiring a big brick in the middle of a USB cable."
