Game two of the 2024 Ampol State of Origin series kicked off at the Melbourne Cricket Ground with pre-game performances by The Temper Trap illuminated by fixtures from Ayrton, Martin Professional and ShowPRO. Show Technology provided the solutions for the production managed by Chameleon Touring Systems (CTS).

In terms of the visuals, lighting designer Tom Wright noted that the team wanted to try and increase the footprint of the stage to fill the venue’s vast performance space. “We created the four stage pods to place the artists on and then the ring of lights to give another layer,” he explained. “We wanted to move away from a single stage and some backlights. We had a new camera director and he was willing to take wider shots and more interesting angles. I wanted to give him something to shoot.”

After recently taking delivery of Ayrton’s IP65-rated laser source Kyalami luminaires, CTS’s managing director Tony Davies was keen to see them in action and sent Wright six for the production. Wright, who had no beam effect lights for the project, utilised the fixtures to project into the sky to add more height to the design. Furthermore, as they were positioned behind the band members, it enabled the cameras to capture the beams. In addition, four Ayrton Perseo profiles were positioned on the field to create a backlight effect on the performers.

“The Kyalami is very impressive,” commented Wright. “It’s a small fixture which means you can get more in a design and you can get more on a truck on a small tour. They have a great tight beam and they were super quick.”

Wright attached 72 Martin Professional VDO Sceptron 10 fixtures with 1,000mm square diffusers to the frames which traveled with the stage pods. “They are easy to programme,” he said. “Drawn in Vectorworks and exported via MVR to the MA3 – so easy to create simple effects on the fly using grids and MAtricks.”

Arranged in a circle were eight lighting pods, each comprising two Martin Professional MAC Aura XIP and two ShowPRO Collider FC Strobes. “The ShowPRO Collider has been a staple of my NRL gigs as they are easy to programme, IP-rated and bright,” noted Wright. “The MAC Aura XIPs were chosen for the same reasons. Knowing they won’t get cut if it rains is massive to me. The lighting pods were there to expand the design out into the field and create large swathes of colour. Plus, any simple dimmer effect running around a circle looked huge.”

The show was programmed and run through an MA Lighting grandMA3 Compact XT console with an onPC setup for backup. The show was all pre-programmed using CuePoints.
