L-Acoustics elevates sound at the International Conference Center Hiroshima

Japan:

Situated at the heart of the International Conference Center Hiroshima (ICCH), the 1,504-capacity Phoenix Hall has installed an L-Acoustics system to power sound for its diverse array of events. Standing as a beacon of global dialogue and cultural exchange, the ICCH has hosted many high-profile events such as the G7 Summit press conferences and the Tokyo Olympics Torch Relay Celebration.

The Phoenix Hall plays host to varying events including classical music concerts, international conferences and academic meetings. The space’s ageing sound system was lacking full-range clarity and coverage to the balcony audience was notably reduced in SPL, which was an issue for conferences and meetings which require speech intelligibility.

The ICCH team turned to L-Acoustics distributor Bestec Audio to design a system to address the audio challenges, as well as elevate the venue’s sonic capabilities. Using Soundvision 3D modelling software, the distributor crafted a bespoke solution comprising L-Acoustics speakers.

The main L-C-R system comprises nine Kiva II per hang, optimised to cover both ground floor and the first balcony seats. Serving the second balcony is an additional L-R system of four Kara II per side. For arena setups, the bottom Kiva II enclosures are deactivated to prevent sound spillage onto the larger stage area. In this configuration, three X12 boxes are added to cover audience seats behind the stage.

To ensure sound reaches balcony overhangs, additional X12 and X15 HiQ speakers have been installed, while a mobile system of three A10 Focus atop one KS21 subwoofer offers enhanced flexibility for live concerts. Driving the system is 12 LA4X amplified controllers installed in the hall’s control room where the venue's professional PA system operator Hiroki Shimizu mixes with a pair of 108P active monitors.

The L-Acoustics system works in tandem with ICCH's technological infrastructure, which includes on-site transmission capabilities for speeches and presentations, simultaneous interpretation in up to six languages and hybrid online streaming broadcast solutions.

“It has become so much easier now since all the L-Acoustics speakers have the same sonic signature,” commented Shimizu. “Situations where there isn't much time before a presentation or performance are common. Instead of doing a one-two check on the main PA, I can insert a high pass filter on the input channel of the microphone and adjust any channel that peaks with feedback. The L-Acoustics system has delivered a world-class signature sound, consistent tone and ideal SPL throughout Phoenix Hall.””
